#BlogFlash2012: Day Eighteen – Wild At Heart

Wild At HeartIn the 1950s and 60s, Venice, CA, known then as the ‘Slum of the Sea,’ was a popular hangout of the Beat poets and a thriving center for the arts. In 1965, Jim Morrison founded his famous rock band, The Doors. In Venice, subsisting on canned beans and LCD, he wrote many of the songs his band would later perform.

Today, the Venice Beach promenade is a gathering spot for the wild at heart. Artists, street vendors, and fortunetellers line the west-beach-side of the 1.5-mile boardwalk. Skateboarders zip by, and, here, you’ll see everything from weightlifting competitions to freak shows to drop-in ‘clinics,’ dispensing medical marijuana. And, in the street musicians singing or playing guitar, the spirit of Jim Morrison lives on.
