#BlogFlash2012: Day Thirty – Winning

‘Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.’

Vince Lombardi, coach Green Bay Packers

WinningNo, Mr. Lombardi, winning is not everything nor is it the only thing. The New Orleans Saints ‘bounty hunting’ scandal-players received $1000 for intentionally hurting opposing players, $1500 if the player was taken off the field in a cart-shows the lengths some of us will go to when winning is the only thing that matters.

To win, we lie: fabricated test results put consumers at risk; cheat: athletes are routinely banned from their sport for doping; steal: rampant plagiarism mars both media outlets and academia; slander: political campaigns (need we say more?). In these and myriad other ways we hurt and, in the worst cases, destroy other people.

What does this say of a culture that tolerates-and even rewards-winning-at-all- costs behavior? What does it say about us? What does it say to our children?
